The grief grandparents experience over the loss of a grandchild is complicated.
A grandchild is the promise of a future of hopes and dreams realized. It is the promise that the family legacy continues. The grandparent is thrust into a nightmare where grief becomes overwhelming. They grieve deeply for their grandchild, but also for the parents, one of whom is their own child. It is as if there are two losses, the grandchild and their own child's life as they knew it. Sometimes their grief is outward and sometimes they may keep it at bay. They may fluctuate handling their own grief while trying to be a source of strength for their child. We at Compassionate Friends realize how difficult this journey can be and want to offer our assistance to the grandparents as well. We have resources and a lending library as well as experience with others on this grief journey.
